I stumbled upon a family of four grazing on some dandelions. A brown adult, two black cubs, and a...white-black bear cub? I originally planned to visit Vancouver Island to seek out the elusive spirit bear (a rare, white colored Black Bear caused by a recessive gene). After research, visiting the Great Bear Rainforest was unattainable at the moment, so I decided on Banff. I’ve never heard of white bears existing anywhere outside of British Columbia. Unlike the “spirit” bears in BC, this rare little lady is not a genetic anomaly or the product of a recessive gene. She’s completely normal, genetically, and totally adorable.
